There are three clubs that have never been relegated from La Liga, there are no prizes for guessing that Real Madrid and Barcelona are two of them, but not many people would imagine that an insular club from Spain’s Basque region would be the third. Known as los Leones, because of the proximity of their stadium to the church at San Mamés, Athletic Bilbao have won La Liga eight times, making them the fourth most successful club in Spain. They have one of the highest average attendances in league, squeezing 38,000 people into La Catedral every week. What is most impressive about the Basque club is that they have done all this, while only recruiting players from an area the size of the Greater Toronto Area – a catchment area with a smaller population than metro Vancouver. While some are drawn by their protectionist nature, others call it xenophobic; I for one am delighted to see a club with strong traditional values and local spirit making an impression against some of the biggest clubs in Europe.
